Bartolomé Esteban Murillo,
The Virgin and Child Offering Bread to the Priests

19th century copy of circa 1679 original
Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes, Seville

The Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes was a retirement home for local clergy. It was funded by charitable human beings, of course, but Murillo's painting points to Christ as the true source of all charity. The bread is not only a metonymy for all the food and assistance given to the priests but a reference to the Eucharist.
